Directories
Directories
Have you ever tried advertising your community with directories? Have you had any success?
Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't since my return to the forum scene 3 years ago. Can you recommend some of the directories to me? I'll be happy to look into them. Thanks

Be careful with directories.
Back in the day, they made for good back links. Google has since changed how it looks at them. Many are considered "link farms" and it will give you more bad than good for using them.
Focus on directories that are niched down and relevant to your forum's topic. Business directories typically are better types as well.
Don't buy directory links to get do follow links. Google will penalize your forum on search for it. They've made that clear as day.

It's a backlink, that's the way I look at it. The more places your site can be found at, the better IMHO.

In some cases, it's not good.
If you're paying for a backlink, it's not good at all. If you submit to a directory for free, it is generally "no follow" and may still be seen as trying to "cheat page rank" on Google.

No one is getting on the majority of these directories and looking at the links. In all honesty, you're better off getting backlinks on websites people are actually looking at.
DMOZ shut its doors because Google and other search engines dominated the way people look for information.
Before search, directories were it. After search engines came along, directories died out.
I'd focus more on business directories that people are using if applicable or rather websites that people are on.

I've never tried using a directory before actually, maybe it's something I need to give a go. It certainly couldn't hurt really.
I have used them before personally and have found them quite useful.
