Ever used a free domain name?
If you're not aware, Freenom offers free domain names for everyone to use. I've used a free domain name in the past when I was first self hosting a community. I didn't have much income to spend on a TLD, so I found .tk, which at the time was the only free domain extension that you could use. I think having a TLD is much better, I don't think free domain names get indexed by google...
I always have personally used and will always use free ones.

Long time ago, I used Tripod and my domain name had Tripod.com in it.
I used an email service called ZZN which allowed you to create multiple @your-site-name.zzn.com
Once I bought my first .com, I never went back to free ones.

Way back in the past I did, yes. The cc train was wild.
If I'm working on something that isn't 'live' I'll use .tk until I am ready to launch the site then I'll buy a domain name.
