Custom Theme

Post by Shawn Gossman »

Have you ever created your own custom forum theme?

If so, for what software?

What made it more unique than other themes available?

No, but someone I'm friends with makes them for me by request at Proboards. And these customized themes are very unique and very beautiful, IMO. These themes also enables me to input my own fonts from my server to they can turn out right like the real thing.

I can edit themes, but never made one from scratch I'm afraid. I've never commissioned one either. I try to use a theme other than the default theme on my forums, or if I do use the default ones I make slight edits to make them stand out.

I did once pay someone to do a custom theme on a Zetaboards forum I owned. It was a really awesome theme. Not too expensive either. But I shortly sold on the forum due to life issues.

I’ve made themes for my forum, but they were all based on the default phpbb theme.

I've always chosen to buy pre-made because they typically have better features and looks and are supported more.

But I have a goal to eventually hire someone to create a custom theme at some point during the life of the forum.

I think it's important to eventually have a unique brand (theme-wise) for your forum after it has been around for a while.

Maybe it will give me time to try an learn how to create my own theme but I don't think I'm that skilled!

Nothing wrong with pre-made if you know how to edit it to make it look slightly different.

For sure.

I use the paid pre-made because I like the features that a specific theme designer I use has but I also enjoyed many free ones, too.

If you can customize it to meet your needs, free is all you'll need.

Eventually though, I'll get a full paid custom theme.

For me, it's the content of the niche that matters, not the physical or outward appearance. Been using the default theme by proboards and my community has been doing great ever since.

I have never made a custom theme for my forums, I don't even have that kind of skill. However, this is something I am looking forward to learning this year. I want to build web developing skills.
